I read an article of this title in Glamour today. It was heart-wrenching. Kelly, a recently-married man in his early 30's, suffers a stroke. Doctors tell his wife, Britt, he has "locked in" syndrone (he can think, see and feel, but is otherwise comatose). No one thought Kelly would survive the night, much less ever move again. With the help of Britt, who gave up her job and became his full-time caregiver, Kelly eventually got to the point where he could sit upright, move his hands, and even speak! Britt became pregnant, which re-energized both of them. Sadly, she lost the baby, and both spiraled into a period of deep depression. The man even tried to take his own life one night. Ultimately, they separated. Kelly moved in with his parents. He wanted them both to heal separately. After all this couple went through, their separation is the saddest part of this story to me. They overcame so much, and he was getting better day by day...what about "in sickness and in health"? It's just so tragic. The love Kelly and Britt had (and I'm sure still do) for each other really comes out in the article...and it's just so awful that they couldn't figure it out together. I hope they find their way back to each other one day.
Out of curiosity, I visited Kelly's website: http://www.kellycorliss.com/Main.html
It's an amazing story of will and survival...and the moral is that sometimes both come with a price.
