Interview

Turns out the interview was only a "20 minute screener," which no one informed me of. Asst Principal saw I have managerial experience and went off on crazy tangent questions I didn't know how to answer (i.e. "How do you handle jealously from co-workers who feel they may be more qualified than you for the position you have...because in this position we're hiring for, you'd be managing ESL teachers who have been doing this for 10+ years and may feel they are more qualified than you are.") I responded the best I could (basically said I would just keep it professional and stay focused on my job description and not get embroiled in petty personal conflicts and just let the teachers know I'm there to support them, not critique them). I had to point out I do not have a Reading endorsement; at that point, the Asst Principal's expression fell. I was pretty sure I wouldn't want this job anyway...I'd be working with teachers way more than students, and that's my least favorite part of the job I have now! It's also a grant-funded position and can only be renewed for up to 3 years. Too much pressure to meet unrealistic demands, if you ask me. Basically, they're expecting an ESL "specialist" to come in and show the ESL teachers how to get better results (i.e. standardized test scores). No matter what this "specialist" ends up doing, it won't compensate for the home lives of these kids. I highly doubt their scores will go up as a result of this position, and I speculate the contract will not be renewed. Just being realistic here. I do plan to follow up with the Principal next week. I want to thank her for the opportunity to interview and express my interest in interviewing for future English and/or ESL positions that might become available.

Well, at least it got you to put on your interview panties. It never hurts to dust those off once in awhile and practice interview skills. Jot down the questions she asked you for which you felt unprepared so you can go over them next time you go through the pony show.

I agree with Nota, at least you got some interview practice in. I know I always get so nervous, but it looks like you had some great answers.
